3 Sentence Review: 3 Books, 3 Sentences

I’ve had a particularly rough patch of reading lately.

  1. Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale could either be a novel told with the repetition of Groundhog Day or the repetition of Autistic/OCD behaviors, but the combination of REPETITIONS was just too much for this reader and although I loved a lot of the writing, I would not recommend.
  2. My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren was like a really long Hallmark movie, which you might think I would love because come season, I can watch five or six of ’em in a row and even though the stories are formulaic and predictable I still get five or six combinations of characters and plotlines to enjoy, but this book was just one really, really long formulaic, predictable (although occasionally sweet, funny, and clever) single story which was too much for this reader and I would not recommend.
  3. The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman (Author), Noah Taylor (Narrator) was a depressing story rife with unlikable characters, boring with its constant repetitions (seriously, we get the SAME info from six different points of view all in a row with little to no variation on the personal interpretation of said info) and despite some lovely literary passages, the narrator’s quiet, wet, lispy reading was too much for this reader (listener) and I would not recommend.

Now, I know, these are probably somebody’s favorite books! And I think that’s awesome. If you’ve read them and loved them, my opinion affects you not at all. I truly had a love/hate relationship with each of these novels but in the end, by the painfully long, dragging, and mostly unsatisfying ends, if you haven’t read them yet, I humbly suggest you move them to the bottom of your To Be Read pile.

About Mary Fran Says

I am an artist, crafter, designer and writer. I enjoy working with mixed media-- applying visual and tactile manipulations to telling a story. Not a lot of market for that, though, :), so I'm focusing on short story submissions and novel completions. Yes, plural. Lots of beginnings, too many ideas, not enough focus.

I so agree Mary, readers make a difference to listening to a book. I’ve found a few readers I really liked and would find other books that they are the readers for.
