  • Re-envision

I attended the DeKalb Area Creative Writers’ workshop this past Saturday to discuss Rewriting and Revising. It was strongly suggested that we not use the word “revision” when going over our work. The prefix “re” means “back” or “again”. “Vision” means “to see”.  Literally, “to see again”. How does that help? You’re not looking to re-see it.

  • Negative Election

    Negative Election

Two weeks from tomorrow is election day. The day we cast our vote to elect the next American president. My president. Your president. OUR PRESIDENT. I’m POSITIVE it will be a NEGATIVE election. Why would the election be any different than the campaigning? It seems no one likes either candidate. (Can you say “understatement”?) Instead

  • MY FIRST BOOK SIGNING!

I have my first official book signing for my novel, Pocket Money, on Sunday, October 9, at a wonderful Indie bookstore called Mystery to Me in Madison.  I’ll be sharing an author panel with Kristin Oakley, who was kind enough to initiate this event, and YA author Kathleen Tresemer. Kristin is the author of God on Mayhem Street,

  • As most of you know by now, one of my passions is a little project I call Word of Art. It’s a fabulous collaboration of authors and artists, sponsored by In Print Professional Writers’ Organization, that culminates in a gallery show, reception with program, and hard cover, full-color publication. In our third year, we are

  • We’ve had a very busy couple of days. I was in Chicago on Thursday to tour the Art Institute, then Bunco on Friday, followed by the NIU home-opener on Saturday, sadly, neither I nor NIU won, and then bbsitting on Sunday. Here are a handful of things I learned: I live about a mile and three-quarters

  • We’ve been in the new house four months. Here are a handful of things that make me happy I moved: Closet Space. Do I really need to elaborate? Those with will understand and those without will rightfully covet. The Pool and Hot Tub. Those were not necessarily selling points, but since they came with the

  • It’s Monday?

11 a.m. Labor Day and I just realized it’s Monday. Now, of course, I know it’s MONDAY, it’s Labor Day! But…I blog on Mondays…and yet… So, in honor of the holiday, this is it, folks… no “real” blog, just a genuine, heartfelt, enthusiastic Labor Day Prayer: May your arms reach wide, Your back be strong, Your

    Writers and Readers

I recently read a blog post weighing the pros and cons of hiring a publicist for your novel. In the article it said, “But in a sea of authors, how will potential readers know about your book?” This comment really struck me. Visually. A SEA! Vast, cresting, full of creatures. But in my vision, the sea

  • For the In Print meeting this past Saturday, Lisa Roettger had done a lovely job putting together a well-researched program on Author Platforms. Unfortunately, Lisa was unable to attend. Fortunately, IP President, Kristin Oakley, was able to step up and take over. Between Lisa’s notes and her own experiences, she did a fabulous job. Kristin led a very

  • I write, therefore I am

I received my first check from Amazon. It’s official, I’ve been paid therefore I am a professional. Whoo-hoo, I’m a novelist! No, really, that’s very cool. Of course I’m not in it for the money. Yet. But I have to say that since this first check covers my initial investment AND there’ll be more coming, I am
