Cape Cod Odd

As always, I compiled a travel list during my last trip, but a lot of it was personal and only meaningful to me and my travel buddies. I wish I could share–hilarious!–so many humorous experiences. We ARE funny. And clever, witty, insightful. But, trust me, you had to be there.

I am so glad I was there.

I’m happy to share this brief list from my travels to Cape Cod. Oddities that made me think, huh, well that was weird.

#1 – I’m leading with this because, honestly, as someone who lives in Northern Illinois, locale of two seasons (say it with me, “winter and construction”), I found it VERY odd that with all of our driving (and we drove A LOT), we experienced zero road construction. Nary a cone, pylon, or group of brightly vested stander-arounders slowing, diverting, or pausing traffic. Crazy, right?! Certainly odd by my seasonal standards.

#2 – Delightfully odd to me was the comment I received from a little old lady on the street in Barnstable who told me I had the most lovely hair. “You have great sheen.” (I imagine my face glowed sheeny after that. :D)

#3 – I do believe that in the Chatham area, all roads are eventually called Old Queen Anne Road. Since Chatham was our home base and we drove a lot, I can’t tell you how many times GPS guided us along Old Queen Anne Road before instructing an upcoming turn left (or right) on Old Queen Anne Road. It started out kind of weird but actually grew to be expected.

#4 – We visited Martha’s Vineyard where we found neither a Martha nor a vineyard. Major weird, I mean, Martha’s. Vineyard.

#5 – A TWO MILLION DOLLAR home owner in Martha’s Vineyard pays HALF the amount in property taxes that I pay. As we perused the posters in the realtor windows, I just kept thinking, wow, they must have really shitty schools. Ha.

#6 – In the newly opened ice cream shop on Martha’s Vineyard, we all took a turn using the facilities, and were each startled (because previous visitors intentionally did not share) by the full length mirror facing the toilet. Odd might be one adjective, unnecessary another, but my favorite response came from my friend who swore she didn’t need to visit the gyny now.

#7 – We pulled into the station near the Newark airport to fill up before returning the rental car and were pleased when an attendant greeted the driver and accepted the proffered credit card, then proceeded to fill the tank. After the day we’d had, it was a special treat to not have to do it. Then we read the sign on the pump. In New Jersey, it’s been illegal for drivers to pump their own gas since 1949. He wasn’t doing us a favor, lol, he was keeping us out of jail.

I had never visited that part of the upper east coast before. It is a beautiful area chock full of places to sightsee, dine, shop, and visit. There’s a lot of American history up there. And although we were keeping an eye out for famous faces and estates, we pretty much only saw other tourists.

About Mary Fran Says

I am an artist, crafter, designer and writer. I enjoy working with mixed media-- applying visual and tactile manipulations to telling a story. Not a lot of market for that, though, :), so I'm focusing on short story submissions and novel completions. Yes, plural. Lots of beginnings, too many ideas, not enough focus.

Another possible use for the mirror is to be sure s skirt didn’t get tucked up when the panties are pulled into place. I think I saw it in a movie, so it must have happened to someone sometime.
