I feel like Frosty the Snowman when he first comes to life and shouts, “Happy Birthday!” A bit overwhelmed and quite discombobulated. It’s been a long holiday season—and it isn’t over yet…
I couldn’t tell you the day of the week. I don’t know if the clothes in the basket are clean or dirty. I barely remember if I let the dogs out this morning. Or was that yesterday morning? Poor dogs.
Remember, it’s the time of year when you dash from ‘and then’ to ‘and then.’
And then I need to begin the packing, the tossing, the returning, the cleaning, the de-decorating. For as much as I love getting the holiday stuff up, I equally enjoy taking it down.
But today, I will take off and recuperate from Christmas. And blog. And maybe play with my new gifties.
All day Monday I kept thinking, as soon as I finish (fill in the blank) I will blog. But it was Christmas Eve day and there was still much to do. All that nonsense about “and all through the house, not a creature was stirring,” is bologna. The mother is stirring. I guarantee, the mother is always stirring.
Last minute shopping, wrapping, shopping for wrapping paper, baking fresh cookies for Santa, prepping the brunch menu for Christmas day, etc, etc. YOU all know! I know you do, you just did it, too.
I did take a break in the middle of the day for a birthday cocktail with a friend. That was nice. Quick, but nice. Of course, the responsible thing might have been to tell her, “No, I’m sorry, I don’t have two hours to spend catching up with you, the day before your birthday, it’s Monday and I must blog.” But more likely the responsible thing was to realize time spent with friends is time spent well.
So after I blog, I’m taking today off. I might get something done, but maybe not. I think that a day of NOT accomplishing something this time of year is an accomplishment in itself.
The New Year is just around the corner and with it comes a whole new batch of responsibilities and expectations (and the tidal wave of responsibilities we’ve held at bay while we completed holiday expectations). But today is December 27th, a Thursday (I checked) and as far as non-responsible days go, this one’s at the top of the list. I dare you to join me—I challenge you to not do anything today!
Of course, making coffee, sampling leftovers and playing with new toys doesn’t count.
Mary, I did NOTHING on Thursday too, and it was fantastic. I didn’t even blog. I did eat my fill of cookies which I’ve done far too often during the holidays, but Christmas and Christmas cookies only comes around once a year. 🙂 I hope you had a great, if busy, holiday. Happy new year!
